The Formalities

The Government of Anguilla grants couples the permission to marry on the island under the authority of a special license which takes 48 hours (2 working days) to process. It is recommended that couples arrive several days before the intended ceremony date to arrange paperwork.

Marriage License Requirements

A Minister of Religion or The Magistrate at the High Court will be available to conduct your special ceremony.

Step 1 – Obtain a Marriage License

All couples wishing to marry in Anguilla must apply for a marriage license through the Judicial Department. Here’s how:

Visit the Judicial Department located at the Court House, The Valley
Office hours – Monday – Friday 8:30am – 2:30pm

Both parties must be present.

Step 2 – Marriage License Cost

If one partner resides in Anguilla for at least fifteen consecutive days before the date of marriage and application of the license, the cost of the license is exempted, however, EC$100.00 or (US$37.20) stamp duty is applicable.
If the stay is shorter, then the cost of the license is EC$650.00 or US$241.80.00 including stamp duty

Step 3 – Provide Proof of Identity

Both parties must present valid identification when applying for the marriage license.These documents include:

a valid passport or original birth certificate; and
a driver’s license with photo.

Step 4 – Previous Marriages

In the event that one or both of the “intended” were married before, an original certified proof of divorce or death certificate is required.

Divorced – Divorce documents (decree absolute)
Widowed – Death certificate (if widowed)

All documents must be in English or translated and notarized.

Step 5 – Obtain an Apostile

European countries usually stipulate that an Apostileis attached to the marriage certificate. This can be obtained at The Ministry of Finance, The Valley.

Step 6 – Age Requirement

The legal age to marry in Anguilla is 18 years.
Couples under 18 must provide written consent from a parent or legal guardian.

Step 7 – Witnesses

Two witnesses are required to be present at the ceremony for the marriage to be legally binding.Your Wedding Consultant will be present to assist you with paperwork or provide any other assistance.
